Do not use rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide near your freshly stretched ears. You can occasionally gently massage a very small amount oil or Holey Butt'r or Gauge Gear around the area to help stimulate blood flow to the area and speed healing, but not until two or three days after the stretch. There should never be any bleeding or significant pain. A little tingling or a small amount of soreness is normal, but if anything more significant than that occurs remove the ear jewelry and downsize back to your previous size.
Be sure to wait until the ear is completely healed before trying again. If all seems to be going well with your new ear gauging then after weeks you can begin changing your ear jewelry if you like and why wouldn't you, with so many great options to choose from?
You should never attempt a new stretch again though until your ears are completely healed from the previous one; one to two months is a good rule of thumb. Many people find this waiting period to be annoying as they want to be at 'x' gauge as soon as possible. However, bad ear stretching practices can result in some serious permanent damage. Stretched ears are beautiful, but that look is one that is worth waiting for.
How long should I wait between ear stretches? Ear stretching is a very personal thing and people heal at different rates. Just how long you should wait between stretches depends upon what size you are gauging up to and how quickly you personally heal between stretches. However, a minimum of a month is recommended for smaller sizes and that time frame should for most people, increase for larger sizes.
The most important thing is that you are sure that your latest stretch is fully healed before attempting to increase again. Any bleeding, strong resistance or pain experienced when attempting to stretch your ears usually means that is not the case and you should wait a while longer. Can I skip a size to speed the process up? Skipping gauge sizes is never a good idea. Doing so increases the chances that you will cause permanent damage to your ears and may even mean that you have to stop the process of ear stretching altogether as a result.
Why shouldn't I wear tapers as every day ear jewelry? Most tapers are designed to be used as ear stretching tools, not as pieces to be worn on a regular basis. Doing so can easily put uneven pressure on your healing ears, leading to unnecessary damage. Also, have a look at the average taper. For non-porous materials antibacterial water soaking is the best and easiest option!
The terms plugs , tunnels and gauges , are often used interchangeably, which leads to so much confusion when first starting with ear stretching. The most prominent difference is between plugs and tunnels : Plugs are solid, and tunnels are hollow. When wearing them, plugs will fill the stretched earlobe, and tunnels will only give it shape while enabling anyone to see through the actual piercing.
There are also plugs that are fully see-through, which might cause confusion because it seems like they are tunnels at first glance. Other tunnels , however, have decorative shapes inside the actual hole, making them appear like plugs at first, but since the decoration is still inside a hole, they are still considered tunnels.
Gauges are something different altogether and even though many people tend to use it to refer to plugs or tunnels , gauges are actually a type of measurement. The smaller the gauge size, the larger the tunnel or plug will be. Gauges go from 20G the smallest all the way to 00G, which is the largest gauge size. After that, larger tunnels and plugs are referred to in inches. The materials of your plugs and tunnels also play a part, with acrylic plugs and silicone plugs being more prone to this issue.
They need to be cleaned more often and not be worn over longer periods of time. Note: Some funky smells can indicate an infection, so if you have a smell along with any oozing or pain you should take a trip to your doctor to get it checked out and potentially antibiotics. Try to avoid putting cream on it without consulting your doctor first as it might aggravate the infection. This is called a blowout, as it looks like the piercing is turning inside out.
Healing it takes time, but it can be done! Put your earlobe into the solution and let it soak for at least ten minutes! Do this at least two to three times a day, and combine with ten-minute massages each evening. We sell ear stretching kits as well as individual tapers of varying sizes so you can start your ear stretching journey straight away.

Add the "O" rings then repeat these steps with the other ear if desired. Tapers are not designed to be worn as jewelry. Do not wear your tapers for any longer than several hours.
Part 2. Wait six weeks in between stretches. Do not remove your first set of plugs or tunnels for at least a week after stretching, and only remove it for the first month while cleaning them. Give your earlobes at least six weeks before stretching your ear with a taper or other method so your earlobes have time to heal.
Use surgical tape to gradually increase the size over time. After you've used 3 or 4 tapers to stretch your piercing, you can use the taping method to continue increasing your size. Wrap your plugs or tunnels with a thin layer of surgical tape and place it back in your ear. Increase the layers of tape around your plugs or tunnels every six weeks so your ear has time to heal.
Use ear weights to stretch your piercing in a short amount of time. Weighted plugs or tunnels can stretch your ears quickly but usually do so at an uneven pace. Use ear weights for short-term stretching, but never wear them overnight. Replace them with unweighted plugs or tunnels after several hours to avoid damaging your ear.
Try tapered claws to painlessly stretch your ears. Tapered claws or talons are used to slowly push through your piercing, much like regular tapers, but are created to be worn as jewelry.
Tapered claws are usually the easiest and least painful method of stretching because they involve less inserting and removing. Part 3. Clean your ears with antibacterial soap twice a day. Wash your hands before touching your ears to prevent infection.
Apply antibacterial cream around the rim of your piercing to further prevent infection. Any more than two times a day can irritate your piercing. Massage your earlobe for five minutes every day. Massage your ear once or twice a day, preferably right after you have washed your ear. This will help your ear heal and accommodate to its new stretched size. Apply jojoba or vitamin-E oil as you massage your ears to keep your piercing soft and stretchy.
Remove your plugs or tunnels for cleaning after a week. To prevent your piercing from smelling bad or getting infected, remove your plugs or tunnels a week after you last stretched your ear and wash it with an antibacterial soap.
Rinse the plugs or tunnels before inserting it back in your ear. While your ear plug or tunnel is out, rub some jojoba or vitamin-E oil in and around your piercing. Watch for signs of infection. Redness, swelling, and green or yellow discharge are the most common signs of infection. Not all of these signs necessarily mean your ears are infected: you may just have minor ear irritation. But if you notice two or more infection symptoms, visit a piercer or medical professional for treatment.
If you notice any signs of infection, check your lymph nodes. Swollen lymph nodes are another sign of infection. I'm thinking about doing this, but will my ears just keep stretching, or can I stop at a size I like? You can stop at any size you like, the only way they will keep stretching is if you size up with a taper. Not Helpful 7 Helpful Not Helpful 3 Helpful How long do I have to wait until I can take out my jewelry after a new stretch? It depends on the person.
Some lobes will adjust quickly to the size and can be taken out without discomfort that same day. Others, it might need to be left in a little longer, possibly up to a couple of days before they can be taken out without causing any extra discomfort and possibly pain. The way to get rid of this issue is either to wash out your ears daily in the shower or to just wear organic plugs. Organic plugs are porous so they soak up all of that ear funk and keep your ears dry and smelling fresh.
Many people have the problem of not being able to fit in their double flare plugs if they have never worn them before. A double flared plug is a plug that has flares on both ends the flares are actually slightly larger than the actual center. Double flare plugs are totally fine to wear but they can sometimes be hard to get in especially on sizes under 0 gauge. There are several tips on getting them in that will make it much easier. The 1st thing to help with getting them in is to use lubrication.
Any water based lubricant will help to get them in and out easily. Also you will want to insert them at an angle. If you try to force them through straight into your ears then it will be much harder for them to fit through. Inserting them at a slight angle gives them enough leverage to pop through. On sizes under 0 gauge however, they will often require you to stretch slightly larger to be able to fit them through. The larger you stretch, the easier double flares will be able to get in, so the smaller sizes are a lot harder to get through.
If you are trying to fit a set of double flares in that are under 0 gauge then it's good to try doing a little tape wrapping see info on the tape wrapping method above to help loosen up your ears a bit and get the plugs in. Jojoba oil is an all-around great product. Its best uses are to soften skin, reduce scar tissue, thicken lobes, and to moisturize. By massaging jojoba oil daily on your lobes, it helps to thicken them up over time and to keep them healthy.
It also helps to reduce the size of blowouts over time if massaged daily. Organics generally don't require much more maintenance then the average set of plugs though.
Materials such as wood will expand and contract as they get wet though so to avoid cracks and swelling, it's for sure best to keep them as dry as possible.
If you are purchasing a set of organic plugs that isn't super expensive, then just wear them and don't worry about if they wet or not. But if you have a nice set that you want to keep for years then it's highly recommended to keep them as dry as possible.
Also organic pieces that have inlays or where multiple materials are used such as multiple inlayed woods , then you for sure want to keep them dry to avoid breakage or cracking.
It's also really good to use jojoba oil on organic jewelry to keep the pieces looking fresh and polished. All you need to do is take a small drop onto your fingers and rub the jojoba oil into the plugs and they will look like a fresh new pair. The topic of gauges vs. We thought it would be easier to make a video on the topic so here is Chris talking the issue. If you are noticing issues such as extreme swelling, redness, discharge, itching, and hotness then you more than likely have an infection.
An infection can be a serious problem so it's best to take care of it as soon as possible. If you have recently stretched your ears and are having all of the above problems then it's for sure best to downsize and let your ears get back to normal. Also wearing jewelry like steel or glass is the best to wear with an irritated piercing these materials will minimize your risk of prolonging the infection.
